It does not matter whether you have been doing your makeup for a long time or if you are a beginner- these flawless foundation tricks will definitely help you get the airbrushed foundation look you have always wanted.

To find undertone for foundation-

  • Check out the colour of jewellery that suits you. If you look better in gold jewellery, you most likely have warm undertones. If you look better in silver jewellery, chances are that you have cool undertones.
  • Check the colour of the veins in your arms. If they appear greenish, you are likely to have warm undertones. If they appear blue, you have cool undertones.
  • Notice your hair colour. If you have gold tones in your hair, you are most likely to have warm tones. And if your hair is neutral to greyish-blue in colour, you most likely have cool tones.
  • If you pull off white or black fabrics, you are cool-toned. And if you look better in brown and off-white fabrics, you are warm-toned.
  • If you get sunburns often, you are most likely cool-toned. However, if you get tanned easily, you are most likely warm-toned.

If you still can not decide your skin colour, you may have a neutral tone. It just means you are in the category of those few lucky people who look good in everything.

Coverage of foundation

Another thing you should consider when choosing a foundation is the level of coverage you’d like. There are three types of foundation coverage-

Sheer to light coverage:
This type of foundation coverage is lightweight and transparent. It evens skin tone but does not cover flaws.

Medium coverage:
With this type of coverage, you can reduce the appearance of blemishes and even skin tone. However, it won’t completely hide the natural colour of your skin and its imperfections.

Full coverage:
This type of coverage completely covers flaws and evens skin tone. However, it can clog pores and encourage skin breakouts.

To choose the perfect foundation-

When it comes to finding the perfect and flawless foundation, consider these two things-
First, the foundation you choose should match the undertone of your skin.
For warm skin tone– try on foundations of shades of yellow
For a cool skin tone– try on shades of blues and pinks.

Try on shades of beige for a foundation if you have a neutral skin tone.

  • Also, test a foundation on your neck to your jawline rather than on your face. Your face can easily take up a different shade than the rest of your body due to the sun.
  • So the goal is to match the shade of your face with that of your body.
  • Try different shades of foundations of various brands and test them in natural light.
  • You will know your perfect shade when the foundation completely blends with your skin and becomes invisible.
  • And please, DO NOT use something just because your favourite celebrity is using it. Refrain from using it even if you think you have the same skin tone as the undertone might be different.

The next step is to decide your perfect foundation by the texture that will suit you. Foundation according to skin type-

Oily skin– matte-powder
Dry skin- cream-based stick or liquid
Combination skin- oil-free

Always go for a slightly darker foundation rather than the lighter one if you have a fair to medium skin tone to avoid looking like a moving cake. On the other hand, if you have a darker skin tone, use a foundation slightly lighter than your natural skin tone to add glow to your face.

Foundation finishes-

Foundations come in three types of finishes, which can alter the look of your skin-

Matte:
Foundation with a matte finish does not contain a reflecting agent. And this makes it the best product to use when contouring your face.

Shimmer:
A shimmer finish foundation contains reflecting components that draw attention to your makeup. FYI you can use it as a highlighter too.

Dewy:
If you are going for a youthful and fresh look, this is the foundation for you. It will make your skin look more hydrated.

To make Your Own BB cream-

To create your own BB cream, place a little
concealer with a quarter-size amount of your favourite
facial moisturizer on your hand. Mix with your fingers and then apply to your face.

Tools to apply foundation

Whatever you decide to use, apply the foundation in downward strokes to avoid elevating your fine facial hair.

SPONGES
Sponges can be categorized into two categories- latex and natural. Latex sponges are disposable and should be chosen for one-time applications, while natural sponges can be used more than once. Both types of sponges can be used for dry and damp foundation applications. Additional benefits of using a sponge include more product control, a sheer and lightweight application, and inexpensive investment.

Kabuki Brush
A kabuki brush is specifically made for the application of mineral makeup. It has a short handle and dense bristles. Mineral makeup contains the same ingredients as a regular foundation (mica, titanium oxide, zinc oxide, iron oxides). However, it has light sunblock and anti-inflammatory properties and does not include parabens, preservatives, mineral oil, dyes, or fragrance.

BRUSHES
A foundation brush has a large head, which provides even coverage. Its synthetic bristles can be cleaned easily. The benefit of applying foundation with a brush is that it is more sanitary. You can use tapping motions on your face to have a more even application.

FINGERS
Fingers are the best tools you have. Use your hands and fingers. It allows you to control the application of foundation, leading to better blending.

To apply flawless foundation-

  • Clean and exfoliate your face.
  • Follow this up with a light coat of moisturizer over your face and neck.
  • If you are going for the natural look, dab some foundation on the problematic areas such as under-eye circles, scars and blemishes, and blend it with your skin tone.
  • However, for full-face coverage, start by dotting your face with your foundation and then use a sponge or a foundation brush or even your fingers to blend it well with your skin.
  • While applying the flawless foundation, be gentle and use soft strokes with your chosen tool of application and never rub the foundation into your skin as it needs to stay on top of your skin.
  • Don’t neglect your neck, nose, jawline or your hairline. The foundation should be blended starting from your hairline down to your neck.
  • Then, dust a little translucent powder to settle it.

Tips for flawless foundation

  • If you are applying foundation for the first time, experiment with a powder or cream-based foundation.
  • While a powder foundation needs to be brushed onto the skin in light outward strokes, a cream-based foundation has to be simply glided with a soft makeup brush.
  • Keep wet wipes handy while applying foundation.
  • Always apply foundation in a cool room with natural lighting.
  • After every application, wipe your foundation stick and clean your sponges and brushes well.
  • Make sure that you remove makeup and clean your skin properly before going to bed.
  • Give your skin a break from the foundation to let your skin breathe.
  • Always use high-quality makeup products as cheap products will cost you heavily later. Also, remember, all that glitters is not gold!
