The Importance of Keeping your Makeup and Tools Clean

When you apply your makeup using various tools such as brushes and sponges, some of the product is left behind on them. When the brush touches your skin, it gets exposed to the sebum and bacteria that cover your skin.
Using the same brush over and over again results in these remnants coming into contact with your skin repeatedly.
The result of this is breakouts and allergies because of poor skin hygiene.
No matter how brilliant your skincare routine is, using dirty brushes or sponges to apply makeup exposes your skin to bacteria several times a day.
Cleaning the tools you use to apply makeup is the only way to avoid this.

How to clean your Brushes

  • Just using the best makeup brushes is not enough to keep your skin looking and feeling great. It is crucial to maintain all the essential makeup brushes you use. Also, ensure that they stay fresh, clean and usable.
  • Regular cleansing is essential.
  • When you use a brush to apply powder, foundation, blush or eye shadow, wipe the surface with a tissue immediately after using it.
  • Replace your brush after 3- 5 years of using it.
  • If you use sponges, replace them after a month.
  • If you use a brush to apply liquid, gel and glitter liners, then replace it within a few months.
  • Within this period of use, it is crucial to clean and sanitize these tools effectively.
  • Always buy a good quality brush cleanser.
  • These cleansers remove residual makeup from the brush and get rid of the bacteria and germs on it.
  • Spray brush cleaner on the used brushes and leave for a while until the cleaner is completely absorbed.
  • Wipe off with a tissue.
  • Wash brushes with shampoo and conditioner and rinse thoroughly at least once every month.
  • Let the brushes dry off by laying them out flat with the heads hanging down so that they can dry quickly and effectively.
  • Clean the sponges and puffs using soap and water. Also, let them dry naturally.
  • Clean the tweezers with surgical alcohol.
  • Allow the brushes and sponges to dry thoroughly before putting them away in your makeup kit.

Keep everything clean

  • Avoid sharing mascara, eyeliners, lip gloss and lipsticks with others to keep them sanitary.
  • After use, sanitize your eye pencils and lip pencils by sharpening them with a pencil sharpener.
  • If you have an eye infection and use eye cosmetics, discard them and use a fresh one to avoid infecting your eye again.
  • You can use powder products with others but make sure you use a different brush.
  • Avoid double-dipping with all cosmetics. It introduces the bacteria and sebum present on your skin into the cosmetic.
  • You can use a palette to hold the makeup product you want to use.
  • Steel palettes are the easiest to clean effectively. Ensure that your palette is clean before you put the required amount of cosmetics onto it.
  • To scrape out the product onto the palette, use a clean spatula.
