It has been a long day. You find yourself in front of the mirror, doing your skincare routine. Then, to your dismay, you realise that your skin is not what it used to be after pregnancy. Now, the dark patches on your skin often make you insecure. Is that how you feel? Well, curing this pigmentation is difficult and time-consuming. But it is absolutely possible to cure Melasma from the inside with these 10 simple tips.
Simple ways to minimise open pores
What is Melasma?
Melasma is a condition in which brown patches appear on the face because of hormonal changes, sun exposure or pregnancy.
How to cure Melasma from the inside-
*Ensure that you do a patch test before applying anything.
Scrub for Melasma
- 1 tbsp Rice flour
- 1 tbsp lemon
- Rosewater
Take rice flour and add lemon to it in a bowl. Add rose water until you get a paste-like consistency. Massage lightly with this scrub for 3-5 minutes on a clean face. Then leave it on your face for 10 minutes before washing it off.
Rice is rich in antioxidants which have skin lightening properties.
It naturally exfoliates the skin and makes our complexion even-toned. Applying lemon juice directly onto your skin can be disastrous, but it brilliantly works when used in limited amounts. It has properties of alpha hydroxy acid that can remove dull skin cells and generate new ones. Lemon juice has citric acid that helps in lightening Melasma.
Rosewater is very soothing and balances the PH level of the skin.
*If you have active acne or sensitive skin, please avoid using this scrub.
Face mask for pigmented skin
- 1 tbsp sandalwood powder
- 1/2 tbsp orange peel powder
- Milk
In a clean bowl, take sandalwood powder and orange peel powder. Add milk until you get a paste. Apply this face mask on your face after scrubbing and leave it on for 15 minutes. Then, wash it off.
Sandalwood powder is beneficial in lightening our complexion. It prevents acne and heals the damage done by the sun’s rays. And obviously, its aromatherapy benefits are a cherry on top.
Orange peel powder helps in toning our skin. It prevents oxidative stress on skin cells and keeps signs of ageing at bay. It also helps in lightening dark spots.
Milk contains lactic acid that deeply cleanses our pores and removes tanning from the skin.
How to actually treat facial hair
Diet
If you want to treat Melasma from inside and consume foods with poor nutritional value, I’m sorry, friend. If you do not take care of your diet, nothing will work. Hormonal imbalance or iron deficiency are common problems that can cause hyperpigmentation. Add more seasonal fruits, green leafy vegetables, coarse grains, nuts and dry fruits into your diet.
Try to consume flaxseeds, coconut water and yoghurt on a regular basis.
Drink more water, juices, herbal teas and work out regularly.
Sunscreen
If you want to cure Melasma from inside, you will have to protect your skin using sunscreen.
Early morning sunlight is very beneficial for our body as it balances the fire element in our body; gives us vitamin D, warmth and energy to our body. But, the sunlight provided by the rest of the day can be very harsh on your skin, which is the primary cause of Melasma and pigmentation.
So, even if you stay indoors, don’t forget to wear sunscreen every day.

It might sound shocking, but certain cosmetics and skin care products can cause Melasma. Give your skin a break and try products with simple yet effective ingredients.
Avoid products that have a strong fragrance. Have a proper and consistent skincare routine.
Aloe vera for pigmentation-
This remedy will be helpful only if you use fresh aloe vera gel from the leaf.
For this, all you have to do is massage with fresh aloe vera gel on a clean face for 5 minutes. Once it gets absorbed into your skin, wash it off and complete the rest of your skincare routine.
Aloe vera contains aloin that helps in skin lightening. It is an excellent moisturiser that fights acne, sunburn and ageing.
Potato juice mask for Melasma-
- 1 tbsp potato juice
- 1 tbsp raw honey
Take raw honey and potato juice in a bowl. Mix the ingredients properly. Apply this mixture on a clean face with hands or cotton pad before leaving it on for 10-15 minutes. After that, wash it off.
Potato contains catecholase that decreases melanin levels. It lightens the skin, brightens it and reduces skin inflammation. Honey has antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It provides moisture to the skin.
Nutmeg face pack for hyperpigmentation
- 1 tbsp Nutmeg powder
- 1/2 tbsp honey
- Milk
Take nutmeg powder and honey in a bowl. To this, add enough milk until you get a paste. Apply this face mask on a clean face, and then wash it off after 15 minutes.
Nutmeg is the best in treating any pigmentation and discolouration issues. It tightens our pores and exfoliates our skin.
Vitamin c toner
Take orange peel in a bowl and add 3/4 cup water to it. Leave the orange peel soaked in water overnight. Then, put this mixture in a blender to blend it. After that, strain this mixture and store it in a spray bottle.
Use this toner only at night before moisturising your face.
Vitamin C is highly potent in lightening any dark spots and pigmentation problems. It brightens our skin.
DIY face oil for Melasma-
- 1 tbsp nutmeg oil
- 1 tbsp almond/ vitamin E oil
Put nutmeg oil in a clean bottle. To this, add almond/ vitamin E oil. Mix both the oils by shaking the bottle. You can use this oil directly on your face to hydrate your skin or use it only in the places where you have Melasma.
Nutmeg oil is beneficial in curing several skin problems like dark spots, eczema, uneven skin tone and blemishes. Vitamin E oil moisturises and heals our skin.
