Awesome ways to dress according to your body shape

Dress according to your body shape

Yes, no matter what size, height or age you are, you can look stunning. And, all you have to do for the same is follow these simple styling techniques. By using these fashion tricks to dress according to your body shape, get ready to look your best every single day without much effort.

Your Feelings

  • First things first, whenever you buy new clothes, make sure you notice how you feel after wearing them.
  • Look for the parts that look good while trying on clothes and the ones you want to hide.
  • What kind of compliments do you receive frequently? Are the compliments about your beautiful neckline, long legs, slim waist or some other? They will tell you about what you should accentuate.
  • Dress according to the parts you want to accentuate.
  • If you have long legs, try skirts, short dresses, shorts.
  • If you have a petite figure, try crop tops, wear belts to accentuate your waist.

Know your colour

There are a few colours that light up your face, enhance the beauty of your eyes, and flatter your complexion and hair. So next time you buy clothes, make sure you buy them in your colour.

If you want to look rich and elegant, notice the fabrics, colour and fitting of the clothes-

Fabrics-

Clothing made with natural materials (tweed, cotton, linen, cashmere) gives you a rich look than clothing made with materials like PVC, PU leather and rough-looking polyester.

If you are on a budget, try synthetic materials that seem like natural materials (rayon, elastane).

Colours-

Natural and earthy colours ( brown, ivory, beige, white, black ) look more expensive than artificial colours ( neon pink, bright yellow ).

Fit-

If you want to look elegant buy clothes, that are your correct size and do not lose their form after few washes.

How to find the best fit

If a garment does not squeeze your body from anywhere, it is considered a perfect fit.

Never underestimate the magic body shapers can do. It is OKAY to use them to achieve that perfect fit, especially when you are going to a dinner party wearing a bodycon dress and you have a high chance of getting food baby afterwards.

Petite women-

  • Petite women should avoid wearing clothes that have horizontal lines or a natural waistline.
  • If you have a petite figure, avoid clothing with busy prints.
  • Slim pants cropped at the ankle when worn with heels create an illusion of long legs. If you are short, make sure you go for a mid-length heel; say no to the heels that are too high!
  • A tailored shift dress with pumps will give you a flattering look.
  • Dresses and tops with waistlines that fit under the bust will create an illusion of lengthening.
  • If you have a very skinny neck, avoid very delicate necklaces and go for a high collar.
  • If you are petite with some curves to flaunt, go for skirts ( not the full skirts that touch below your knees ).
  • When you buy long coats, go for the ones that are a little shorter than the knee-length coats.
  • If you want to create an illusion of a heavy chest area, try a padded balconette bra.
  • Please, stay away from bulky clothes with big shoulder pads and choose lightweight woven fabrics like a crepe.
  • If you are trying to appear tall, pay attention to the sleeves of your garments and trouser legs and make sure they fit according to your body.

Full figured women

  • If you have a curvy figure and want to dress according to your body shape, avoid details at the neck (scarves, frilly collars and big bows).
  • To make your clothes appear stunning, add long drop earrings to your outfit.
  • If you have a chubby neck, choose v-necklines. They create the illusion of a longer, leaner neck.
  • If you are insecure about your arms, long sleeves will make them appear slimmer whereas, cap sleeves will do the opposite.
  • Full-figured women look best in print on fabric that has fluidity.
  • If you are planning to wear short sleeves, make sure that they are not tight.
  • If you have a large bust, it is better to avoid skinny tops with flaps on the chest area.
  • A narrow tunic-style top worn over slim pants creates an illusion of overall slimness.
  • To make your belly appear thinner, go for tops that are blouson shaped. Do not buy these tops in bulky fabric as it fails the whole purpose of appearing slim.
  • Soft A-line dresses also create an illusion of a flat tummy.
  • Big prints, large polka dots, horizontal stripes will make you look wider, while colours like black, navy, charcoal, dark brown, and grey make you look slimmer.
  • Flat-front trousers reduce inches while pleat-fronted trousers add inches, and wide, straight-legged trousers camouflage heavy legs. Make sure your pants are tailored to give more definition to your shape.
  • If you want to smooth out your curves, try clothing with draping.
  • Do not wear baggy clothes. If you want to appear flattering, choose clothes that cinch you in the right places.

Pear shape women

  • Try to go for clothes that are thinner at the waist and narrower at the knee. Do not go for garments with big shoulder pads thinking this will create balance. Your natural, sharply defined shoulder line will look the best.
  • Neutral-coloured and tailored clothes will look flattering over you.
  • To take away attention from your hips, wear something with prints on the top half. Balance it with the solid coloured bottom half.
  • Rather than cinching your waist, try raising your waistline as it will make your legs look longer.
  • Loosely buttoned cardigans that fit just above your waist and have the top buttons left undone create an illusion of a raised waistline.
  • If you have short legs, do not wear ankle strap shoes; they will make your legs look shorter.
  • An off-shoulder neckline of a dress or top will make your waist look tiny by widening your shoulders.
  • Wrap jackets, shirt jackets and soft cardigan styles will look more flattering on pear-shaped body type.
  • If you want to downsize your breast, wear a dark solid coloured garment on top with the bottom half in a light colour.
  • A long jacket can make any outfit look elegant while hiding figure flaws. Choose jackets with small, soft shoulder pads to give you more shape on top.

  • Stay away from double-breasted jackets so that you don’t add bulk to your hips.
  • If you are insecure about your tummy area, then a slim-fitting tunic-style top over straight-cut and flat-front trousers will create an illusion of slimness.
  • Avoid wearing clothing with big pockets. When your style is simple, and you wear a dress according to your body shape, it looks the best.
  • Cuffs, pockets, and buttons add width to the body.
  • If you have a larger hip area and do not want to draw attention toward it, say NO to miniskirts.
  • Whenever you buy jeans, go for stretchy and figure-skimming jeans rather than loose cut ones.
  • Match your hose to your shoes; this will make your legs look longer and thinner.

Rectangular figure women

  • If you have a rectangular figure and no waist, try to create the illusion of waist using a dark coloured belt and not the bright coloured ones. This will give you more definition.
  • If your shoulders are narrow, try boatneck to maximise them.
  • Whenever you wear a skirt tuck, it creates an illusion of some curves.
  • To bring attention to the face and away from the body, wear a pendant and matching earring.
  • If you want to add volume to a small bust area, try clothes with ruffles and pleats on them.
  • If you are insecure about your bottom area, try skirts ( A-line, ball, ballerina, gipsy ) or full skirts and A-line dresses. A boat neck top, bodysuit with a skirt will give you a very chic look.
  • If you are tall with a rectangular figure, pleated trousers will look great on you.
  • Go for a low-heeled shoe, which is cut low on the instep and stick to a thinner, more graceful heel.
  • Women with rectangular figures can experiment with clothes made in heavier fabrics like wool and tweed.
  • With the rectangular figure, you can try busy patterns and prints on the top half, with a solid colour on the bottom half.
